SATURN CDT Funding

The Skills And Training Underpinning a Renaissance in Nuclear (SATURN) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) was set up to provide high quality research training in the science and engineering that underpins nuclear fission technology. The SATURN CDT focuses on three broad themes:

  1. Current nuclear programmes
  2. Decommissioning and cleanup
  3. New build reactors

The universities involved in the SATURN CDT and the corresponding SATURN CDT leads are as follows:

  • The University of Manchester (Lead: Professor Scott Heath, scott.l.heath@manchester.ac.uk)
  • Lancaster University (Lead: Professor Colin Boxall, c.boxall@lancaster.ac.uk)
  • University of Leeds (Lead: Professor Tim Hunter, T.N.Hunter@leeds.ac.uk)
  • University of Liverpool (Lead: Professor Maulik Patel, Maulik.Patel@liverpool.ac.uk)
  • University of Sheffield (Lead: Dr Brant Walkley, b.walkley@sheffield.ac.uk)
  • University of Strathclyde (Lead: Professor Rebecca Lunn, rebecca.lunn@strath.ac.uk)

Any applicants to the NDA PhD bursary call from one of the above universities should have consulted with their SATURN CDT lead prior to submitting their NDA PhD bursary call proposal. This is because any successful NDA PhD bursary call proposals received from SATURN CDT universities will also be submitted as SATURN CDT proposals.

If a successful NDA PhD bursary call proposal were also awarded SATURN CDT funding, ~50% the studentship would be funded under the NDA PhD bursary call and the other ~50% of the studentship would be funded under the SATURN CDT. As with all NDA PhD bursary projects, the student would be provided with industrial supervision and invited to attend and participate in annual NDA seminars and annual NDA site visits. The student will also be expected to complete a quarterly progress report for NDA. These are detailed in the sections below.

Student Stipend

NDA recognise that increases in the cost of living have impacted postgraduate researchers. In line with the UKRI announcement 30/1/25 NDA expect students funded through the NDA PhD bursary call to receive a stipend that is at least equivalent to those paid by UKRI, i.e. £20,780 FTE for the academic year 2025 to 2026.
